Reading Stories, Transforming Lives /
Compartir cuentos y enriquecer la vida

Letter of Award from the National Endowment for the Humanities
Text of letter, dated September 10, 2003

Dear Dr. Andres:

On behalf of the National Endowment for the Humanities, I congratulate People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos on the recent award for Reading Stories, Transforming lives / Compartir historias transforman la vida.  The Endowment is very pleased to be a major sponsor of this reading and discussion project, which, when carried out in our nation's libraries, will illuminate important facets of the human experience.

As you know, NEH awards are the result of a rigorous, highly selective review process to choose those projects worthy of scarce federal funding.  This year, the Division was able to fund only three Humanities Projects in Libraries and Archives projects at its regular, yearly deadline.

The Endowment judged Reading Stories, Transforming Lives / Compartir historias transforman la vida to be an excellent project designed to encourage adults and young adults to enjoy reading and to think critically about what they have read.  We see that the project is well grounded in an interpretive and analytical framework and we admire the thematic exploration of the selected readings, which are fine choices, culturally mixed, interesting, and depict various points of view.  We also note that there continues to be a great need for high quality humanities programming with bilingual flexibility, and we congratulate you for your outstanding design of programs in both Spanish an English.

The Endowment sends all best wishes to you and your staff as you move forward with this exciting, outstanding project.  We salute you for your vision in exploring American and Spanish literature both deeply and broadly for people of all ages.

Sincerely,
Nancy E. Rogers
Director, Division of Public Programs
