Living With Literature/Writing Our Stories

SELECTION SEVEN

In response to "Haircut," by Russell Marks

My Gifts

Sitting thinking about my gifts, I hear to my right a very tall man quote different poems from his favorite poets. Sitting past him is a very strong man in stature and in spirit. He often talks about his life and tries to help us with his stories.

Next is a very intelligent man who can tell you everything about something simple, who can explain something about something that will make you say, “Hmmm!” Next to him is a quiet man who has hidden stories in his mind, waiting to come forth. Then we have a chef who comes in and out of conversations briefly and gives some input.

We have a wonderful lady that I met here. She’s African American, but she’s the only white African American I have met. Her stories are wonderful too.

One other lady here brings out different things in her stories that make me think no matter where you’re from, we can all relate.

The last lady is a person who can get almost everything out of you, and a story, and my gift is imagination.
