SELECTION TWO

In response to "The Day It Happened," by Rosario Morales

The day it happened was no different than any other day, so I thought. I got up early as I do every day, walked downstairs, opened the screen door and finally picked the daily newspaper up off the top step of the row of stairs. While I was reading the sports section, the phone rang.

When I answered a soft and sweet voice replied, “Good morning, baby.”

That lovely voice was none other than my girl, Princess. She had called to remind me of our date for later that evening. I assured her I would be there and on time. I stopped by Bill’s pizza parlor on the way to Princess’s house and bought two steak hoagies and Princess looked so cute when she opened the door. Always with a big smile on her face and mesmerizing perfume to tickle my nose.

We sat down, ate our steaks, played the card game Uno a few times, when I felt this thump in my heart.

I knew it wasn’t a heart attack, but what was it?

I had never felt anything like that in my life. Well, in spite of my efforts to control it throughout the date, I failed. I kissed Princess good night and left to go home. I couldn’t help but think about that thumping in my heart, “Oh no! I can’t believe it. I’m in love!”
